The Office of Board Governance received the following communication, which is introduced for referral:
Dear Governance Committee,
My name is Mohamad Shafi Mohamed Rafik, and I am part of the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) community. Since 2023, I have been trying to get MPS to recognize two important Islamic holidays, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, as official school holidays.
These holidays are very important to many students and families in our district. Recognizing them would show respect for our diverse community and allow students to celebrate without missing school.
I have a petition with strong community support for this change. I would like to present it and discuss this in a public hearing. Could you please let me know the best time to schedule this hearing?
