Background:
Since 1987, Women’s History Month has been observed in March. The celebration of women’s contributions to culture, society, and American history began in the public school district of Sonoma, California in 1978.

In 1980, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week and six years later, Congress expanded the event to the entire month of March.
