On March 17, 2022, the Office of Board Governance received the following communication:
Hello MPS Board Members,
My name is Kabby Hong, and I'm honored to be the 2022 Wisconsin Teacher of the Year. I also happen to teach nearby at Verona Area High School where I am an English teacher. I'm reaching out to you because I would love to speak at an upcoming Board meeting to begin a conversation about my platform which is Asian American visibility.
The last few years have been and continue to be challenging for the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. There have been more than 10,000 documented hate crimes directed against members of the AAPI community. I believe that education is a powerful tool to combat hatred, stereotypes and ignorance.
I have a 15 minute presentation that I would love to share with the board, and I'm wondering if we could arrange a time for a visit? Thank you in advance and for all of the hard work I know that you are doing on behalf of our students.
